Description
Selected as an Honor Book by the Printz Award! Ellie is tired of being shamed about her weight and decides to change that in this moving novel in verse, the first by Lisa Flipps. Ever since Ellie wore a whale bathing suit and caused quite a stir at her 5th birthday party, she's been bullied about her weight. To cope, she tries to live by the Fat Girl Rules, such as "don't make waves", "avoid eating in public", and "don't move so fast that her body doesn't move". She has found her safe space, her swimming pool, where she feels weightless in a world obsessed with fat. In the water, it can stretch out like a starfish and take up as much space as it likes. It's also where she can get away from her mother, who thinks that criticizing Ellie's weight insistently will motivate her to diet. But Ellie has allies like her father, her therapist, and her new neighbor, Catalina, who loves Ellie for who she is. With this support, Ellie will finally be able to let go of the Fat Girl Rules and starfish in real life, without apologizing for being herself or fabulous.
