For their first anniversary, Regan and Jack Reilly decide to spend four days at his parents' beautiful beachfront home on Cape Cod. Usually, the house is overfllowing with Jack's big, boisterous family, so they're looking forward to spending a few peaceful days there away from the demands of their busy lives. As they arrive late one night, they're just in time to experience the beginning of a major storm. Their plans to laze around and watch the storm churn are thwarted when Skip, the young caretaker, comes running into the house distraught because he's just discovered the body of Adele Hopkins, the woman renting the house next door, at the bottom of the staircase on the beach.
